Heat pumps and gas furnaces solve the same problem—keeping your home warm—but they work differently. A furnace burns natural gas (or propane) to create heat. An air-source heat pump moves heat from outdoor air into the house using refrigeration, which can deliver more heat energy than the electricity it consumes in moderate temperatures.

In mild and mixed climates, heat pumps often produce lower annual heating costs than older furnaces, especially when paired with a well-sealed duct system. In very cold regions, standard air-source heat pumps lose capacity as outdoor temperature drops. Many installations include auxiliary electric heat or a dual-fuel setup that switches to a furnace below an outdoor balance point. If a bid promises furnace-like performance at all temperatures, ask what happens at 10°F or 0°F and whether backup heat is included in the price.

Gas furnaces remain common where fuel is inexpensive and winters are severe. Compare annual fuel cost, equipment efficiency (AFUE), venting requirements, and combustion safety checks—not just the install price. Heat pumps eliminate onsite combustion but increase electrical demand; panel capacity and wiring upgrades may appear as separate line items.

Read bids for completeness: outdoor unit model, indoor coil or air handler, thermostat, line set, refrigerant type, permits, and removal of old equipment. The “better” system depends on your climate, utility rates, and how the proposal addresses backup heat, defrost strategy, and humidity control in cooling mode.
